More than 12 Indiana colleges and universities will coordinate on- and off-campus programs throughout the duration of the statewide read of Frankenstein. Programs included special courses, freshman orientation activities, film festivals, exhibits, lectures and panel discussions.

University partnerships included:

  • Examining Ethics podcast: We’re teaming up with our friends at DePauw University’s Prindle Institute for Ethics to create a special episode of this internationally distributed podcast. We’ll explore the many ethical questions raised by the famous novel and consider how moral philosophers have thought about these issues over time.
  • Online courses: Two online courses are in the works (so far), open to people in Indiana and beyond. The first, to be offered next fall by the University of Indianapolis, will be a special one-credit book club-style course, free to senior citizens and $50 for everyone else. In 2018, IU East’s nationally recognized distance-learning team will offer an interdisciplinary course on the idea of Frankenstein as Golem, drawing on ideas from religious studies, science and technology, English, art, sociology and psychology.
  • Monstrous Art Show: University of Indianapolis fine arts students and faculty will explore the idea of the monstrous during a special Frankenstein-inspired course in 2017, culminating in a gallery show at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. 
  • Lilly Library Special Exhibit: Indiana University’s special collections library is a trove of treasures, including a rare first edition of Mary Shelley’s seminal novel. Curator Rebecca Baumann will organize an exhibit that also draws on the library’s women in science collection. 
  • Film Festivals: We’re working with a variety of partners, including Indiana University, the University of Notre Dame and Ivy Tech Community College, to offer “Fronkensteen” film festivals around the state.
  • Frankenstein Theatrical Production: Did you know Ball State University faculty wrote and produced an original play based on Frankenstein a few years ago? As part of One State / One Story: Frankenstein, this incredible work came to life once again.
